Finding the Best Manufacturing Staff, Before You Hire
These tests were developed to closely simulate critical tasks performed by employees involved in
manufacturing jobs. Dozens of manufacturing job experts have ensured that the Manufacturing Skills Series test battery has a high degree of relevance to actual job demands.
A wide range of factors are measured by the tests. Included with the basic test battery is a structured interview to review work experience and the ability to work well with others. The Manufacturing Skills Series tests for four major factors that determine job success:
- Interpersonal Skills
- Working with Others
- Safety Attitudes
- Production and Quality Orientation
- Mechanical Reasoning
- Numerical Skills
- Reading

The Test Battery
The Manufacturing Skills Series consists of a set of written ability tests covering a full range of job-related manufacturing skills as well as the structured interview.
A brief description of each test follows.
Using Codes and Tables
This test examines the ability to use simple codes and look up information in a table. The first part of the test has 12 problems which require the candidate to look up numerical codes for both product type and color. The second subtest gives numerical results of quality control tests. The candidate must verify that the numbers are within the desired range by using a reference table.
Basic Math
This test has 13 problems requiring use of math skills. The candidates may use a calculator to perform simple addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Some problems are "word" problems requiring the candidate to set up the method for solving using simple calculations.
Measuring
This subtest measures the ability to carefully measure using a ruler. Accuracy to within 1/16th of an inch is required in measuring a series of rectangular shapes.
Mechanical Reasoning
The Mechanical Reasoning subtest of the Manufacturing Skills has 31 problems which relate to such skills as:
- Comprehension of mechanical relations, such as with gears, levers, centrifugal force or friction.
- Flow of liquids.
- Recognition of tools used for various purposes.
- Interpreting simple mechanical drawings, charts and diagrams.
Reading
Candidates are asked to read passages from typical materials that workers must read. The passages have missing words which the candidate must fill in from the choices available. The test is relatively easy and is designed to ensure only a minimum competency to understand required written material.
Structured Interview
An interview guide is provided which contains 65 questions. It is intended that the organization select a subset of these questions which best addresses the particular concerns within their labor market. Questions are organized by topic area. The topic areas include:
- Work Habits (attendance, punctuality, etc.)
- Safety
- Teamwork and Interpersonal Communication
- Quality Orientation
- Working with Supervision
- Self Managed Work Teams
Many of the questions were based on hypothetical situations and incidents which occur on the job. A situational test presents problems related to teamwork or safety to the candidates and asks them for their responses to each situation.

Easy to Give
The Manufacturing Skills Series tests are easy to administer. The administrator needs only to hand out a test booklet to each candidate. Scores for all the tests in the battery can be averaged, combined or weighted depending on the individual needs of
the organization.
The written test battery should take 1 hour or less to administer, depending upon how many tests are used. The interview would normally take about 30 minutes.

Cost Savings
The Manufacturing Skills Series identifies and saves the expense of further testing candidates who are likely to have difficulty dealing with basic manufacturing tasks. Hiring the right candidate can save thousands of dollars in productivity problems, errors and turnover costs. By using these tests early in the screening process, less time needs to be spent on costly interviews and background checks.

| Even when the labor market is tight, it is still important to hire the very best manufacturing workers. |
