The Office Skills Series
The Office Skills Series consists of a set of written ability tests covering a full range of job-related office skills. A brief description of each test follows:
Proofreading and Spelling
Part 1 is identification and correction of common errors and extra words in typed copy. Most of these are errors that would not be found by a computer spell checker. Part 2 of the test provides 32 words commonly misspelled in business. The applicant must recognize and correct spelling errors.
Written Expression
This is a series of short problems simulating written short memos or letters. Here the candidate reviews several ways of phrasing a response. The correct choice is based on completeness of information, tact, pleasantness and clarity.
Checking
Three variations of name and number checking problems are presented. Each question requires checking one block of information to ensure that it is identical to a comparison block.
Coding
The coding test is a simulation of insurance applications to be verified and coded using various tables. In this test six items, such as identification number and postal code, are coded.
Filing
This test simulates an actual filing task. Twenty names must be inserted into an existing alphabetical list. The list is arranged in seven "filing cabinets."
Basic Math
Simple problems in addition, subtraction, multiplication and division are presented to the applicant. A calculator is used to perform computations.
Business Math
Situational problems represent simple but typical problems in checking invoices, balancing accounts, solving personnel and payroll problems, and the
